But be aware: you may encounter a lightning strike that’s too close for comfort, vantage points that make you ache with their beauty, similarities and unlikely companions along the trail, wild things, snakes, lakes and rivers, cowboy cliches in Jackson, pioneer spirit and above all, a sense of calm and wonder at the surreal and oft-overlooked majesty of the Grand Tetons. ♣

Amazing photos! Some of the best I’ve seen of the Tetons. I’m getting ready to head up there for a shoot in a few days and am taking the opportunity to get some free time in too. Your post has made me even more excited about it! Out of curiosity, what lake was the kayak photo taken and do you remember where you rented from. I was thinking about taking one out on Jenny lake if it’s not to terribly cold and would love to know your opinion on where. Really any words of the wise that you have would be appreciated. Thanks!

I envy your ability to get back there before the next of their two seasons begins (to paraphrase what they say in Jackson, there are just two seasons–winter and bad skiing season). I’m planning a longer post on the pleasures and treasures of the Tetons later this week, but to give you a few tips for your upcoming adventure there: The kayaking was on Jackson Lake, out of Coulter Bay, which is the best option for renting and paddling. Take a look at the image here: Lined Up and Ready to Jump In for a sneak preview. There’s a fabulous new paved bike trail to ride (rent bikes right on the trail, at Dornan’s–where you can also enjoy a great pizza and view–or in Jackson near the trail start at Hoback Sports). The hiking couldn’t be more superb, especially the trail that starts at Jenny Lake to Hidden Falls, but you’ll need to have bear spray and a bear whistle with you. (No kidding.) Catch a float trip down the Snake River from within the Park, or south of the Park in Jackson. If you’re an early riser, you ‘ll probably see moose and elk; and buffalo pretty much anytime, especially in the Antelope Flats area. Awesome photos (in the traditional sense of the word.) The Tetons are magnificent, but we love the Big Horns in northeastern Wyoming.

Thank you, Sally. Turns out you’ll be waiting a long time in a thunderstorm and wasting a lot of shots when you try to grab lightning. I got a lucky strike. Worth the wait and pseudo-danger!
