Composition by the Rules

“If I’d observed all the rules, I’d never have got anywhere.” Marilyn Monroe

Obeying the rules is often the last thing any creative person does, but every now and then there are good reasons to. Like composing a busy photograph by following the Rule of Thirds. The iPhone, like many digital cameras, offers a helpful grid to help you compose, so your focal point aligns with one of its intersections. Whether you use it or not, just don’t ever make the rookie mistake of composing with your subject dead center. Unless you’re aiming to break to rules. Which is the truest way good art is created, after all.
