The Broken Spoke offers dining, dancing and development. Owner James White, now 75, likes to point out that although “the Broken Spoke isn’t quite as old as the Battle of the Alamo — it captures the mystical charms that make Texas worth fighting for all over again.” He’s still right about his country music legend, five decades after its opening: the Spoke is one of the definitive Texas dance halls, disguised in a rustic red building on South Lamar and now completely enveloped by new upscale development.

Though its iconic touring bus, known for its decorative Lone Star treatment, has been reclaimed (after decades) by the Texas Top Hands, there are still plenty of memories intact within the Spoke’s museum—and as always for the last 50 years, plenty of two-steppin’ on the dance floor. ♦
