Abandoned. Why?

Why am I so drawn to photograph abandoned places and things? My image library is overflowing with them. Abandoned places are evocative. They provoke my storytelling curiosity. Who lived there? What did they do there? Why did they leave? I can be a voyeur: I step inside an abandoned place and imagine what happened there, what it was to live there, then to lose it. I photograph an abandoned place and move on, awed but cowed by the power that could cause people to abandon a thing that once must have had meaning. Surely it is the most primeval fear: abandonment.

I’m frequently shooting things from the past. You’ll find more in my Time Travels, HERE. Hat tip for inspiration to the Daily Post’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Abandoned.

  1. I love abandoned buildings as well. I think you hit the nail right on the head by saying that it piques our curiosity and gets our storytelling juices flowing.

    Terrific shot!
