Austin Speed Shop is bidding farewell to South Lamar, to make way for, yes, another luxury apartment development. Its new location near by is still under wraps, but it’s not likely to have the Keep Austin Weird charm of, say, the floor—where original owner Francis Reissig inscribed “1959” with his initials into the building’s wet concrete after it was poured over 50 years ago.

Just a rod’s throw away is the Saxon Pub, alongside South Austin Music, offering a win-win for custom car owners who are music fans as well. If you want to conjure up a vision of how that new luxury apartment complex might play up against the Pub, just look a wee bit further south on Lamar at the Broken Spoke. ♣

  1. oh boy, another luxury apartment on S. Lamar. Can’t wait. Maybe, if we all wait long enough we can all move into dorm like structures where we can pay exorbitant rents and say, “hey look at me. Look how cool I am.”
