Walk Back to Weird at Wiggy’s

Walk or Don’t Walk, it’s up to you at Wiggy’s

I have long been fascinated by juxtapositions. In fact I’ve tried to build my entire Vanishing Austin photography series around them, and this one always grabs me as I look towards downtown in the early evening. Despite the other towers rising all around and high above the Frost Bank building, its lighted tower often finds a spot in my photographs of Austin.  Though Austin finds itself a little bit less weird these days, Wiggy’s Wine and Spirits, above, enjoys a loyal following and that original weird style.

Wiggy’s has laid claim to its slogan, “Your Neighborhood Liquor Store Since 1973″ for many decades, along with an old wooden Indian at its door and two walk-in humidors inside its dark, tin-ceiling quarters on Austin’s West 6th Street. A step inside Wiggy’s to buy wines, craft beers, single-malt scotches and cigars is like a step back into the Keep Austin Weird days. Just so you won’t miss it, Wiggy’s flashing arrow signage directs you inside for LIQUOR. Walk or Don’t Walk, it’s your choice. ♣
