Yes, there are beloved Austin, Texas landmarks in the Vanishing Austin photography series that are surviving, indeed, even thriving. Woot! Settle back with Queen and enjoy the show of our cherished Austin survivors. Just click any image to start a slideshow.
Yes, Austin, if there is a silver lining to all of our upscale urban development, it’s that many of our beloved touchstones, and their signs, still thrive here. ♣
What’s your favorite Austin haunt among the champions?
About myVanishing Austin series: While many Austin landmarks are lost, many are survivors still. Admire them all in a slideshow, HERE. Prints start at $35.
You can marvel at what’s lost and what’s survived in my Endangered Species of Austin poster, featuring 16 Austin icons, and sized at a handsomely large 24 x 36,” available for $25, HERE.
As a creative professional, I find my ideas in exploring and recording life's details—as I've done in writing my Dust series historical novel, Unspoken, and its predecessor, A Habit of Hiding. My photography focus is the scenic gumbo that is my Vanishing Austin series, and the many other thematic photography collections I've created. In my paintings, I capture the colors of the American southwest and Mexico. For my blog on creativity, Pairings, I explore art, writing, and photography in Texas and beyond, and sometimes indulge in time travel. I bring it together at JannAlexander.com, where my writing and art meets tech.
Bravo! Gtreat tune and photos. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
You’re good to say so. Thanks, Gerry. A stirring song, indeed! Tomorrow . . . the post is on The Ones That Got Away. Tune ideas welcomed! Trying to avoid the depressing songs. 😉
So many fantastic signs. What a great post.
Glad you appreciate them, Jenny, ever visited Austin? They’re everywhere you look!
We’ve never been to Austin, Jann. Although we do have relatives in Texas, so I hope to make it there one day. I will definitely look forward to seeing some of those signs in person if we do get there! :o)
I love these old signs. My favorite, I think, is the Red Eyed Fly; reminds me of an uncle in San Antonio who used to frequent a bar called The Fractured Fox…only he called it the Wounded Coon after a couple of drinks. And speaking of drinks I did find that Lone Star beer has 4 disbributers in California, 3 of them sort of near, so I’ll just wait until my next Texas visit.
That sounds like my kind of sign, too, Angeline. Austin is so chock full of creative signs it’s hard to drive down any one street here without hitting the brakes for a photograph. Enjoy your Lone Star!
The department of tourism should be courting you. You have certainly put Austin on MY list of places that I want to visit!
That’s great to hear, Maya. You’ll have a great visit! As we say in Austin, “Welcome to Austin! Please Don’t Move Here.”
Wow! What a wonderful collection of signs and they look so good grouped together like this. I live in a fairly small town so we don’t have that many signs here.
thanks for sharing. 🙂
Appreciate that, Maria. Thanks! I imagine you have a great chance to document the signs of small town life?
Great idea Jann! There really are lots of signs around when you think about it! 🙂
If I’ve inspired you, I’m glad. I’d love to see your signs of small town life; shout out when you’ve posted them, Maria!
